His Excellency Ambassador Tim Mawe Visits DDIC
19th July 2025
The Darling Downs Irish Club was privileged to host a visit from His Excellency Ambassador Tim Mawe just a few weeks before his term as Ambassador of Ireland in Australia comes to a close.
On Friday evening 18 July, while in southeast Queensland to see the British and Irish Lions play the Wallabies, Ambassador Mawe took a detour to the Irish Club Hotel for a reception with over 40 members of our Club who had gathered to meet him and share stories of history and culture. We were delighted to hear a very charismatic and entertaining man speak of his fondness of visiting regional areas where, he said, it is less easy to be Irish than in capitals such as Sydney and Brisbane. He spoke of the changes in perceptions of the Irish in Australia over recent decades, and the importance of gathering and sharing traditions in regional areas for those who are Irish-born, Irish descendants, and those who simply appreciate the Irish way.
Ambassador Mawe was also heard speaking of his favourite Irish musicians, his shared knowledge of towns and business in Ireland from where our members have come, and also of his role as a civil servant.
It was a wonderful experience to see our members' room bursting at the seams to show our appreciation of the Ambassador for paying us a visit, and a great evening of camaraderie and community.
